Nearby Nature is a participatory interactive map which pinpoints public sites of “urban wilderness”. “Urban wilderness” are sites which the sound decibels are similar to that of natural wilderness sites. The idea is to connect anyone to the therapies of the natural world, no matter their location. That nature can be accessed and healing to all, and exists everywhere.
These spaces are mapped by measuring sound decibels and attaching a set of specific instructions of how to fully engage with the exact location. The instructions help the participant receive the maximum amount of “nature” while enjoying this location.
Currently the map exists as a public google maps site. The mapping process has begun in Tucson, Arizona and San Fransisco, California but locations can be added from and for anywhere in the world. These geotagged locations of “urban wilderness” can be added by anyone. Participants can measure sound decibels using cell phone apps, and can add specific instructions to the description on the google maps pin.
